Spring Bucket List: Fun and Frugal Things to Do in Spring

It is finally springtime! Here are 43 fun and frugal things to do this spring. Many of these fun activities are completely free! Make sure to add them to your spring bucket list!

1. Have a picnic

Spring is the perfect time for a picnic, or, should I say, for dining al fresco. Pack your favourite sandwiches and drinks and head outdoors to enjoy the sunshine. It is a great budget-friendly outdoor activity that you can enjoy with your family and friends in the spring time.

Note that the COVID pandemic isn’t behind us yet, so let’s make sure that we enjoy the outdoors responsibly!

2. Fly a kite

While you are enjoying your picnic at a park, it may be time to fly a kite! It is one of the most fun outdoor spring activities for kids, and you get to get some exercise in!

3. Pick wildflowers

Another fun spring bucket list item is to pick some wildflowers. Spring is when all little pretty flowers pop up everywhere you go. How many of the wildflowers can you name?

4. Ride a bike

To soak the beauty of spring in, you may want to go biking and have the spring breeze caress your face and your hair. You can enjoy the bike rides in your local park, along the shoreline, or even in a national park.

5. Go hiking

Instead of riding a bike, you can also go hiking. Hiking is an excellent low-impact workout that will add a little dose of health into our routines. Choose a pair of comfortable walking shoes and some warm clothes, find some biking trails, and go explore nature in springtime!

6. Go rock climbing

Here’s another outdoor activity for you: go rock climbing! Do be careful of loose rocks and ticks though. Climb slowly, test holds and wear helmets, and be sure to do a thorough tick check after climbs. Don’t forget to drink enough water and eat enough food to keep your energy up!

7. Enjoy a hot air balloon ride

If you are one of the adventurous types, you may want to ride a hot air balloon. You can enjoy the breathtaking scenic views below high up in the sky. It’s a romantic couples bucket list item as well!

8. Go golfing

Golf season usually starts in March. If you are into golfing, why not check out a few of your favourite golf courses this spring?

9. Enjoy a round of disc golf

Disc golf, occasionally known as Frisbee Golf, is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target. It is played using rules similar to golf.

10. Play mini golf

Mini-golf is a great game regardless of your skill levels and age. It is a perfect family outing idea in the spring.

11. Go horseback riding

Whether you are a seasoned professional or someone who has never ridden a horse, horseback riding can be an awesome item to add to your spring break bucket list.

12. Do some water sports

Kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, parasailing, sailing, rafting, you name it!

13. Skip rocks

I am not a good rock-skipper myself, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy this simple activity! If you come across a body of water, you may want to try this activity or perfect your skills!

I found this great YouTube video that teaches you how to skip rocks:

14. Go bird watching

If you are into nature, one thing you cannot miss is to go bird watching. Just like fall, spring is another migration season for birds. After spending the winter somewhere warm, birds are now returning to the Northern hemisphere.

Watching birds can be an exciting and fun activity to do with your family. There will be plenty of species for you to identify.

15. Set up a bird feeder

I love watching our feathered friends out my window. But you can go on step further: you can feed them! St up a bird feeder and purchase some seeds. Guess how many different kinds of birds will stop by?

16. Celebrate Earth Day

If you love nature, you will certainly want to celebrate Earth Day. It is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

Choose a simple action of green to help support the cause. Whether it is conserving energy to turning off the lights, recycling, or volunteering with earthday.org, every small action will help.

17. Go on a spring break vacation (or staycation)

Spring break, which usually happens in mid-March, is the perfect time for a family vacation. It is the perfect time to visit a destination that is on your (spring) bucket list during your spring break trip.

Of course, you may also prefer to have a nice and quiet spring break staycation. After all, it is often spending time with your loved ones that is the most precious part of a vacation.

18. Go on a camping trip

With the warmer weather, blooming flowers and signs of new life after the cold, it is the right time for camping! Enjoy the new season outdoors, and learn about nature along the way.

19. Attend the Canadian Tulips Festival in Ottawa

An iconic Canadian way to welcome spring is to attend the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa in May. It is an annual festival that has been around since 1952, and it claims to be the world’s largest tulip festival.

20. See the cherry blossom

Another floral beauty you cannot miss is the cherry blossoms. These beautiful flowers typically begin to bloom in February and peak in April. Vancouver holds the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival every year. They also offer free activities online to safely engage the community in interactive, social, and artful ways.

21. Do a nature scavenger hunt

Who will be the one to spot the first signs of spring in your family? Kids can learn a thing or two about the plants and the animals they encounter as well while running around.

22. Go berry picking

You can pick blueberries and strawberries starting late spring season, which just so happen to be some of the tastiest berries out there.

After a winter’s hibernation, farmer’s markets generally re-open in the spring. Enjoy some fresh vegetables and fruits and support your local vendors!

26. Deep clean your house

Spring is the perfect time to organize and clean your home. Nothing feels as satisfying as staying in a home that is clean and fresh after a spring cleaning session.

If cleaning the entire house at once feels overwhelming, I recommend that you divide up the task into smaller pieces. What works the best for me is to focus on one room at a time.

27. Decorate your house

Now that your house is clean and fresh, it is time to decorate your house with spring-themed decorations! Whether you want to change up your pillow covers to more colourful and vibrant ones like these or make a wreath using the wildflowers you picked while enjoying nature outside, the possibilities are endless!

28. Have a garage sale

While you are deep cleaning your house, chances are you have come across many items that are still in great shape but you haven’t used in a while. Instead of throwing them out, I recommend that you host a garage sale. It is a fun activity to pick out all the sellable items and to price them, and you get to make a little bit of money on the side!

29. Shop for after-winter sales

You may want to put the money you made from the spring garage sale into good use with after-winter sales! Spring is the perfect time for discounted winter gears, boots, and more!

30. Plant seeds

If you have a garden, spring is the best time to plant some seeds! The best seeds to plant in the spring include lettuce, summer squash, cucumbers, cilantro, and more! If you have a garden, now is the best time to buy some seeds and start planting! This spring bucket list item will fill your garden with fresh vegetables!

If you don’t have a garden, don’t worry! You can still plant some simple herbs on your windowsill. I really enjoy indoor gardens, such as the AeroGarden Black Harvest Indoor Hydroponic Garden. It is a lovely feeling to be able to use the herbs you plant in your dishes!

31. Have a garden tea party

If you have a garden, no matter how big or small, you can throw a beautiful garden tea party for your family and friends.

32. Have a water balloon fight

Who doesn’t love a water balloon fight? Get some balloons, fill them with water, and have plenty of fun in the spring breeze!

33. Watch the spring rain

The spring rain is magical. The barren land comes back to life after the rain. I especially love the smell of grass and earth after the rain, and how the raindrops slide on leaves like little pearls of happiness. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of the rainbow after the rain!

34. Read a book

If you are a book lover like me, you will want to read a good book regardless of the season. For spring, however, you may want to pick up a new book to get a refreshing and new perspective just like what spring brings!

In addition to reading a book, you may also want to watch a springtime movie. Some of my favourites include Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, and Sound of Music!

A flea market is a fun place to be. It is almost like treasure-hunting as you browse through the vendors. See what you can find there!
