Fun Activities for Adults that You can Do for Free (or with very low cost)

Who says adults can’t have fun? Who says that you can’t have fun for free, or only with very little money? Here are the best fun activities for adults that you can do for free!

1. Explore your own city on foot

I enjoy exploring my own city. You can almost always discover something new, whether it’s a new coffee shop, a new bakery, a new building, or a festival like the Canadian Tulip Festival. You can also burn some calories if you walk around, though using public transit may let you explore more areas.

2. Attend a street festival

Street festivals are plenty, especially in the summer. Attendance is usually free. You can see free street performances and try some inexpensive food if you’d like!

3. Making some money on the side

Speaking of free activities, how about free activities you can do to make some money on the side? There are many opportunities online that allow you to make some nice pocket money on the side. You can complete online surveys, download a cash-back app, or sign up to become a freelancer.

Becoming a DoorDash driver can be an especially lucrative opportunity right now because of how much people love ordering take-outs.

DoorDash is an online food ordering and food delivery service platform. Of course, they will need people to help their customers pick up food orders and deliver them to their houses. As a DoorDash driver, you can set your own time and your own goals, and be your own boss. Sign up to become a Doordash driver today!

Turn your love for pets into income with Rover

Pet sitting is a great choice if you love animals and have experience living with them. Not to mention, pet sitting can be lucrative. Many people are willing to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for their beloved furry friends to have a safe, loving, and fun home while they are away.

Rover is my top recommended site when it comes to pet sitting. Many Rover sitters earn $1000-1500 a month with just 20-25 hours of work. Sign up to become a Rover pet sitter today!

Be an Instacart shopper

The philosophy of Instacart is simple. It is a grocery delivery service, and they require people to help their customers pick up groceries from stores and deliver them to their houses. There are two types of jobs available:

Full-service shopper

These are independent contractors that use the Instacart platform to shop and deliver orders for their customers. You most likely will need a car. It is like being an Uber/Lyft driver on steroids.

Benefits:

  • It offers the most flexibility. You can work as little or as often as you want. The amount you earn, however, obviously is correlated with how much work you do. The earning depends on the number of items, type of items, driving distance, and effort involved in shopping and delivering.
  • You keep 100% of customers’ tips!

In-store shopper

These are Instacart employees who, among other things, shop and stage orders in one store at a time. These part-time shoppers work scheduled shifts, up to 29 hours per week.

Benefits:

  • No car is required for this role.
  • You earn an hourly wage, which provides more stability.

Another really nice bonus of working for Instacart is that you become eligible for their referral bonus. That means that every time you refer someone to shop with Instacart, you get some extra cash in your pocket.

How much money can you make being an Instacart shopper?

You can earn an hourly rate of $17.14 as a full-service shopper, and around $13.39 as an in-store shopper. That’s just less than an hour of work to earn 10 dollars fast!

4. Window shop

I love seeing all the designs from different stores that are forever changing. It seems like each time I go, I can find something different to admire.

5. Hang out with friends

Spending time with friends is a great way to have fun. Hanging out doesn’t have to be expensive. If you are on a budget, feel free to invite a few friends over to your place for a potluck. If you want to go somewhere outside, simply go to the park for a picnic or a coffee shop for a nice cup of coffee.

It is the people and the company that count, not necessarily the money.

6. Meet new friends

If all your existing friends are busy, no worries! How about spending some time meeting new friends? Meetup is an awesome website that I use personally. I love how there are so many groups on there. I am sure you can find an event that suits your interest and needs. They even have online events hosted on Zoom now.

7. Do puzzles

Are you looking for a mental challenge? Puzzles can be a lot of fun for you! Pick one up over on Amazon, and you can have plenty of fun alone, or with your friends and family!

8. Have a conversation with ChatGPT

If you are feeling a bit down and want to have someone to talk to, ChatGPT could be an awesome company. Simply sign up for an account, and you can chat with it whenever and wherever you want. ChatGPT is also very knowledgeable, so you can use the opportunity to learn a few things as well!

9. Learn a new language

If you have some free time, why not use the time to learn a new language? In a bilingual country such as Canada, knowing how to speak English and French could give you a huge advantage. If you are thinking of traveling anywhere, learning the local language of your destination, even if it’s just a few most commonly used sentences, can also be very helpful.

10. Sleep in

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 3 adults in the United States reported not getting enough rest or sleep every day. Why not take your time and have a good sleep without alarms? Clear your mind and let it drift into dreamland. It is certainly awesome and free.

11. Give yourself a spa at home

A DIY spa at home is certainly an inexpensive way to relax and have fun when you have a little bit of downtime. Light some nice candles, add some Epsom salt to your bath, and play some light background music, and you have yourself a nice atmosphere to relax in.

12. Visit a museum

Visiting a museum can be a great way to spend some time learning something new. Often, your city may provide museum passes for free. For example, Toronto has MAPS that gives you access to multiple museums for free with your library card. Even if you can’t find free passes, the tickets are usually affordable.

13. Play board games

Playing board games is another fun activity suitable for all ages, including adults. You can go to a local board game cafe. They are pretty affordable, usually under $10 admission, and you can get access to hundreds of games. If you have a game you really like and want to play repeatedly, investing in those games, such as this OFF TOPIC Adult Party Game, may be a good choice.

14. Go to a farmers’ market

Another fun activity to do as an adult is to visit the local farmers market. You can simply walk around and enjoy the hustle and bustle, or you can pick up some fresh produce and baked goods.

15. Bake some goodies

If you have some time on hand and you want to have fun, why not bake some goodies? Start from scratch, with flour, sugar, butter and water; it can save you money and allow you to enjoy the baking process to its full extent. Your home will also smell wonderful. Why not check out my recipe for homemade scones here?

16. Stargaze

If you can, drive into an area where there’s less light pollution, and have fun stargazing. What constellations can you recognize?

17. Make yourself a fancy meal

If you have some free time on hand, why not take the time to make yourself (and your family and friends) a fancy meal? Pour some wine and enjoy a nice piece of steak or any of your favourite dishes!

18. Have some wine

You don’t need a fancy meal to have some wine. Just have some wine! But make sure you drink responsibly.

19. Do a quick workout

If you are looking for a fun and free activity as an adult, doing a quick workout is certainly an option. There are so many free YouTube channels that you can visit to find a quick 15-minute workout. Get your body moving and your heart pumping now!

20. Look over old photos

While you may no longer flip through albums, you can still look over old photos on your phone. It’s nice to go back and visit the past.

21. Read a book

You can also read a book if you have some time on hand. Pick a book you like, make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy your time.

Check out this list to see the personal finance books I recommend!

22. Check out a new brunch place

If you have a little bit of a budget, trying a new brunch place is a small but affordable luxury. It is usually less expensive than a restaurant, but you can still enjoy the service and the great food!

23. Check out a new coffee shop

If you only want to spend a few dollars, why not check out a local coffee shop? You can get a simple cup of coffee, or go a bit fancier and get a latte or cappuccino instead. I especially enjoy browsing the internet or people-watching when I am in a coffee shop. You can do the same too!

Even better, you can do this for free! Check out my post to learn how you can get yourself a free Starbucks drink!

24. Get a virtual reality experience

This is something incredibly fun. To save money, you can look up sites such as Groupon for a deal.

25. Plan your vacation

Although vacationing can be expensive, planning your vacation by yourself costs absolutely nothing! It is a fun activity to do when you have some downtime. Going through the plans helps you stay organized (including going through my comprehensive vacation packing list), and may motivate you to be disciplined with saving money so you can actually go on your dream vacation!

26. Research places to visit

If you don’t have any specific place in mind, it may be time to do some research so you can add new places to your bucket list! YouTube is a great place to research, as well as online forums such as Reddit or Lonely Planet.

Here are some of my favourite destinations:

27. Sing

Singing has ample benefits, such as lowering stress and anxiety levels, boosting your confidence, and improving your breathing. It is also completely free!

28. Take a fun class

Have you always wanted to try out a class, such as a DIY candle class, or a clay class? See if you can find a coupon on Groupon and actually attend a fun class!

29. Volunteer

Volunteering is usually free. You get to spend some time helping people in need. Whether it is a food bank, a hospital or a local library, there are always plenty of volunteer opportunities for you to discover. Not to mention that you will feel great about yourself!

With the world moving more and more online these days, you can even volunteer virtually from the comfort of your home!

30. Browse the internet

The internet has an endless amount of knowledge and fun things for you to discover. I find myself getting lost on Wikipedia quite often, clicking through link after link. You get to learn something new in the meantime!

31. Do some sports

Are you into sports? Doing sports could be a fun activity to do with minimal cost (well, depending on what kind of sports you choose). Find a local basketball court or soccer field and ask a few fellow sports enthusiasts to join you for a fun match!

32. Start a blog

If you enjoy writing like me, you may want to start a blog. I initially started this blog out of pure interest, but as time goes by, I have started generating a healthy side income from ads (I joined the ezoic ad network), affiliate marketing (I see the best results from Aragon Premium), sponsorships, freelance writing opportunities, and more.

One nice thing I love about blogging is that it doesn’t take a lot of capital to start. You could select a free platform to test the water, but as you progress, you may want to sign up for a professional platform, such as the ones I use below.

Here are the blogging tools I use:

  • NameSilo: One of the most economical registrar and hosting companies out there. I stumbled upon this company and have been very happy with the service. It is my current registrar. Use promo code “bellawanana” at checkout to get a special discount! Sign up for NameSilo here.
  • SiteGround: This is my hosting company. I like it for its SiteGround optimizer plugin, the free email accounts, and the better speed with my site. Sign up for SiteGround here.
  • Ezoic: This is the ad network I have joined. It pays quite a bit better than Google AdSense. Sign up for ezoic here.

33. Go to a trampoline park

Who says adults can’t have fun jumping on a trampoline?

34. Colour

I have gotten into colouring lately. It is a really fun way to spend some time alone and focus on one thing. Some people say that colouring is a good form of meditation.

What’s nice about this option is that it is very inexpensive. You can purchase a colouring book for five dollars, and pick up a set of colouring pens for less than $20. These pieces of equipment will last you quite a while!

36. Work on a DIY project

For all of us who are into crafts and DIY projects, this is a no-brainer when you have some time alone at home. You can leverage YouTube for this again, though sites like Instructables are also perfect for showing you step-by-step how to make things. You will derive huge satisfaction from making things with your own hands, and you get to share the results with your friends and family!
