Markiplier net worth: Career and path to riches
Fischbach first joined YouTube on March 6, 2012, creating a channel under the username “Markiplier”, and uploaded his first video on April 4, 2012. The video, unfortunately, is no longer on YouTube. Fischbach’s original intent for the channel was sketch comedy where he would be portraying all of the characters in the sketches. This led to the creation of the name “Markiplier”, a portmanteau of Mark and multiplier. Fischbach’s first web series was him playing a playthrough of the video game Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
In 2014, Markiplier announced he was planning to move to Los Angeles, California to be closer to other resources for his channel, such as the YouTube Space and other content creators.
He joined the Board of Directors of Red Giant Entertainment in November 2014.
Cyndago and hiatus in 2015
Cyndago is a retired YouTube channel prominently known for its satirical, comical and dark-themed sketches and numerous music videos. It was established in December 2012 by Ryan Magee and Daniel Kyre, who were then joined by a third member, Matt Watson from Kids w/ Problems. Markiplier started collaborating with them on this channel in 2015 when he began living with Ryan and Daniel.
The channel ended in September of 2015 after the tragic passing of Daniel Kyre. The final video was posted on October 11, 2015, to commemorate Daniel’s life. Fischbach then went on hiatus from September 17, 2015, to October 5, 2015.
Come-back and continued growth
Markiplier’s channel continues its exponential growth since he came back from the hiatus. The growth is so phenomenal that it deserves its own section (see below).
In 2015, Fischbach co-hosted the 2015 South by Southwest Gaming Awards with The Legend of Korra voice actor Janet Varney. He was also featured in YouTube’s year-end special YouTube Rewind.
In October 2019, Fischbach announced a YouTube Originals production titled A Heist With Markiplier. Produced by Fischbach and Rooster Teeth, this series features other popular YouTubers such as Rosanna Pansino, Matthew Patrick, and Game Grumps.
On November 15, 2019, Fischbach launched a new channel with fellow online YouTuber Ethan Nestor called Unus Annus. They planned to upload a video every day for one year. However, after the year ends, all the videos and the channel itself will be deleted. Following a commemorative Livestream that peaked at over 1.5 million concurrent viewers, the channel was deleted on November 14, 2020.
Channel growth stats
I thought it would be very interesting to document the growth of Markiplier’s channel in a specific section.
As I mentioned above, Mark uploaded his first YouTube video on April 4, 2012. Very little is known about the growth between April 4 and Dec 26, 2012. However, we can safely say that the channel surpassed 50,000 subscribers on or before December 12, 2012.
On December 26, 2012, Markiplier posted a video titled “50,000 Subscriber special”.
I also dug up a post on Reddit that Markiplier published 8 years ago, in which he shared with Reddit his tips on how he got there.
Of course, his channel didn’t stop at 50,000 subscribers.
He hit 500,000 YouTube subscribers on or before June 16, 2013.
A few months later, he hit 1 million fans. He uploaded the milestone video on Oct 30, 2013.
He returned from his hiatus and reached 10 million subscribers on October 15, 2015.
On March 29, 2018, Fischbach announced his channel on YouTube had surpassed 20,000,000 subscribers. He also announced his Tasteful Nudes Calendar in the same video.
Below is a graph from Trackalytics that shows you visually the exponential growth Markiplier has undergone between mid-2014 and today.

Markiplier’s source of net worth
Markiplier is a successful YouTube personality. Every year he earns between $10 and $18 million from his various social media endeavours.
His career earnings in recent years are broken down as follows:
In 2017, he earned $12.5 million. He earned $17.5 million in 2018 which was enough to make him the sixth highest-paid YouTube stars in the world. In 2019, Mark earned $13 million.
His main sources of income are below:
Ads on his YouTube channel
It is impossible to find the exact numbers, but we can do some rough estimates to understand how much this YouTube star earns through ad revenue alone.
Average CPM (cost per thousand impressions) on YouTube is around $2.00. This means that for 1000 monetized views, Markiplier can earn $2. Markiplier’s channel receives approximately 14 million views a day. Some quick math will give us about $28,000. Multiply it by 365 (because YouTube doesn’t go on vacation!), we can estimate that Markiplier makes an annual revenue of $10,220,000.
Of course, the CPM fluctuates, and probably even Markiplier himself doesn’t necessarily know what his CPM will be exactly the next day. Social Blade, a popular website tracking popular social media accounts, estimates that CPM ranges from $0.25 to $4. Even at the lowest range, Markiplier’s impressive 14,000,000 views per day can earn him a healthy $1,277,500 a year.
Of course, other than YouTube ads, Markiplier also has sponsors for some of his gaming videos.
He has worked with sponsors like Dirty Bomb, Robot Entertainment, Guns of Icarus, etc., who pay Markiplier healthy sums of money for him to feature their products in his videos.
Clothing brand: CLOAK
Markiplier teamed up with Jacksepticeye, another popular internet personality, to start CLOAK, a clothing brand. Since then, Pokimane has also joined as a partner. They sell t-shirts, hoodies, joggers, and other clothing focused on comfort. Their tagline is “hidden in plain sight”.
Markiplier net worth: Lessons learned from his path to wealth
With 27.9 million subscribers and more than 14.5 billion video views on his YouTube channel, Markiplier is certainly one of the brightest YouTube stars.
His story is nothing other than inspiring, and we can learn a lot from him.
Here are a few takeaways from Markiplier’s path to wealth:
Persistence is key
It took Markiplier 8 years to get to where he is today. Although gaining a cool 50,000 subscribers within the first 6 months of YouTubing probably already makes a lot of YouTubers envy, it is still a far cry from the almost 28 million that his channel has today. Also, as he stated in his Reddit post, he was posting videos every single day in the beginning, even when he had only 50 to 100 subscribers.
Patience is the key to success. If you are determined to do something, just keep at it.
Don’t be complacent
Imagine what would happen to the channel if Markiplier becomes complacent when he hit 100K, 500K, or 1 million subscribers? Although those are certainly huge accomplishments and milestone worth cheering for, Markiplier did not stop there. He continued collaborating with other YouTubers and making videos of amazing quality.
Do what you love
Even if you may not be particularly interested in the games that Markiplier plays, it is impossible not to notice the enthusiasm that Markiplier exudes in his videos. He LOVES playing video games. He is also good at them, whether it’s Fortnite, Let’s Play, Call of Duty, or on Roblox.
Do what you love. You will be surprised by what it can bring.
Connect with others
Needless to say, Markiplier is one of the most successful YouTube celebrities out there. However, at the same time, many others also enjoy playing games and uploading videos of themselves playing games online. So what made him such a successful commentator compared to others?
I think it largely has to do with his ability to connect with his fans and be relatable. As he stated in his Reddit post when his subscriber count reached the first 50,000:
A piece of advice that I could give you is to exhaustively connect with your audience. If you have a single person that truly enjoys your videos and messages you, you have to engage them personally.Markiplier
The same principle applies to many other online side hustles. Whether you are an aspiring blogger, influencer, vlogger, or YouTuber who want to make money online, connecting and sharing your passion with your audience is how you can grow your presence.
Share your wealth
One thing I appreciate about Markiplier is his dedication to charitable work. In the last few years as an influential YouTuber, Markiplier has raised over $3,000,000 for charity.
